Arizona: AIIA Supports Red Means Stop Coalition

Arizona Insurance Information Association, which NAMIC is a member, paid for a recent newspaper advertisement in the Arizona Capitol Times to educate citizens and legislators about the importance of the Red Means Stop campaign.

As part of its annual public education and partnership development programs, AIIA has supported the Red Means Stop Coalition for several years.

According to state government data, more than 7,000 people are injured each year in Arizona and more than 80 people are killed as a result of drivers failing to stop for a red light or stop sign. The data show that motorists are more likely to be injured in crashes involving running a red light than in any other type of crash.

"Red Means Stop is a simple and effective traffic safety message. The insurance industry in Arizona is doing its part to get that message out. We are proud to support grassroots efforts like the Red Means Stop Coalition," said Ron Williams, AIIA executive director.

The goals of the coalition are to:

  • increase public awareness of the consequences of intersection crashes that injure and kill motorists, their passengers, and pedestrians;
  • support legislation, enforcement, and prosecution that imposes stiffer penalties on violators; and
  • assists victims and their families surviving the painful circumstances that follow these tragedies.

"AIIA's active participation in the Red Means Stop Coalition is a perfect example of the insurance industry's commitment to motor vehicle safety education and community outreach programs," said NAMIC's Western State Affairs Manager Christian J. Rataj.
