A close vote of 153-140 advanced a mandatory seat belt bill from the New Hampshire House of Representatives to the state Senate last week. Enactment of the bill, HB-802, would mean New Hampshire would no longer hold its unique status of being the only state without a mandatory seat belt law for adults. The state does have a mandatory law for minors.
The legislation would make failure to wear a seat belt a primary offense, and it would establish fines of $50 for first offenses and $100 for subsequent offenses. Passage of the bill would also provide the state with millions in federal highway funds.
