District of Columbia: White Collar Fraud Act Takes Effect, Council Recesses

The District of Columbia Insurance Federation, a NAMIC state advocacy partner, reports the White Collar Insurance Fraud Amendment Act took effect on July 28. The Act, passed by the D.C. Council, restricts the solicitation of clients, patients or customers for two days following motor vehicle accidents for the purpose of making insurance claims. Additionally, the new law limits access to police reports for 21 days following motor vehicle accidents. The Act also provides 14 days to rescind a settlement agreement executed within 21 days after an accident if the injured party was not represented by counsel.
