Several important insurance-related insurance bills were enacted during the Tennessee General Assembly, which adjourned May 26.
On May 18, Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen signed Senate Bill 3504 into law. The bill rewrites the state's county mutual statute. NAMIC worked closely with representatives of the Tennessee Association of Mutual Insurance Companies in securing passage of the bill.
The governor also has signed House Bill 3539, the Silica Compensation Fairness Act, which spells out medical criteria to be followed in compensating silica victims.
Other bills of note include Senate Bill 2220, a security breach bill; Senate Bill 2263, which makes amendments to the state building code; and Senate Bill 2261, which allows the insurance commissioner to deviate from the per diem structure the NAIC uses for contracted actuaries and financial examiners.
