SAN DIEGO (September 20, 2010) – The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies presented the Federal Legislator of the Year Award today to U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett, R-N.J., at its Annual Convention in San Diego, Calif.
“Congressman Garrett has been a champion for the free market and open competition on issues of importance to NAMIC member companies and their policyholders,” said Charles M. Chamness, NAMIC’s president and CEO. “Throughout the debate over financial reform, he played a vital role for our industry by highlighting the difference between property/casualty insurance and other financial services providers.”
Garrett is now serving his fourth term representing the 5th District of New Jersey. He is a well-respected member of the House Financial Services Committee, where he has specifically taken a leadership role on many insurance issues. Prior to coming to Washington, he served in the New Jersey General Assembly as chairman of the Banking and Insurance Committee.
“As a senior member of the Financial Services Committee, we know Congressman Garrett will play a vital role in shaping federal policies that affect our industry, and we are grateful for that,” Chamness said. “With the knowledge of our industry he gained during his time in the New Jersey Legislature, Congressman Garrett is one of relatively few members of Congress who has an in-depth understanding of the property/casualty insurance industry and its importance to the economy. On top of that, he has been an outstanding representative for the people of New Jersey’s 5th District.”
The NAMIC Legislator of the Year Award is a statuette of Benjamin Franklin, who founded the first successful mutual insurance company in America more than 250 years ago. That company, the Philadelphia Contributionship for Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire, is still thriving as The Contributionship Companies and remains a NAMIC member today.
“As an organization of mutual insurers, we understand what serving the people means,” Chamness said, “and that’s why NAMIC is proud to have Scott Garrett as our Federal Legislator of the Year.”
