The Alabama Senate Governmental Affairs Committee is scheduled to vote tomorrow morning on SB 434, a bill that would prohibit an insurer from cancelling or nonrenewing a property or homeowner’s policy without specific justifiable cause.
The committee has taken testimony on the bill over the course of several meetings. NAMIC Southeast state affairs manager Liz Reynolds has contacted committee members to register opposition to the legislation. In addition, Commissioner Jim Ridling spoke against the bill, saying it would give insurers “a highly uncomfortable feeling” that would not be helpful to efforts to encourage new companies to enter the market and existing companies to write more business.
I urge you to contact members of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee (below) and ask them to vote against SB 434 when it comes before them tomorrow. As a NAMIC member doing business in Alabama, your voice can make a difference as we work together to oppose this legislation.
If you have employees and agents working in Alabama, consider sharing this Alert with them and asking that they make appropriate contact, as well.
Please let me know if you are able to make contact and if you have any questions. Thank you so much for your help.
