We are a competitive nation. I think this has a lot to do with why a belief in American exceptionalism is such a prominent part of our national character. We see value in effort and believe that everyone should have the opportunity to succeed through hard work and sacrifice. We see how competition builds character and establishes self-esteem in young people. And we see how the competition of the free market can produce the kind of dynamic growth and change necessary to become the most powerful nation in the world. In a nutshell, Americans embrace competition.
